The story behind the photograph

Near Banchory in Aberdeenshire, Crathes Castle brings together distinctive tower-house architecture and carefully maintained gardens. Its sculpted planting offers a striking balance between historic stonework and shaped greenery.

This photograph captures the castle from the gardens, allowing the topiary to frame the architecture beyond. Carefully refined light, texture and atmosphere preserve the character of the building and the peaceful beauty of its surroundings.
