There is a profound, heavy stillness to Culloden Moor when the weathered silhouette of Leanach Cottage emerges from the tall grasses. This piece captures the last remaining witness to the 1746 Battle of Culloden—a humble structure of stone and heather that stands as a symbol of the Highland heart’s endurance. More than a farmhouse, this cottage is a portal to the past, its low-slung walls having watched the final collapse of the Jacobite Rising and the dramatic transformation of the Scottish way of life.

In processing this image, I chose to lean into a rich, painterly aesthetic with a warm, sepia-toned palette. By emphasizing the rugged textures of the thick heather thatch and the ancient fieldstones against the vast, atmospheric sky, I wanted to evoke a sense of living memory—less a static museum, more a heritage landscape. It is a tribute to the resilient spirit of the Highlands and the quiet power of a structure that has weathered centuries of storms and history alike.

Each image is carefully refined in post-production with restraint — shaping tonal balance, colour harmony, and texture to preserve the natural atmosphere of the scene.
