Reflections of Preston Mill | East Lothian

There is a quiet charm to Preston Mill where centuries of rural Scottish history meet the stillness of the East Lothian countryside. Nestled beside calm waters and framed by reeds and summer greenery, this distinctive red-roofed mill is one of Scotland’s most recognisable historic buildings — made famous to many as the mill at Lallybroch in the television series Outlander.  

In processing this image, I leaned into a soft, painterly aesthetic with gentle warmth and restrained contrast to preserve the peaceful atmosphere of the scene. By emphasising the reflections within the water and the rich textures of the weathered stone and terracotta roof, I wanted to evoke a sense of timeless rural Scotland — a place where landscape, heritage, and memory quietly intertwine. The still water mirrors the iconic conical kiln roof, creating a composition that feels both balanced and reflective.

Preston Mill has stood beside the River Tyne for centuries and remains one of the oldest working water mills in Scotland. Its unusual architecture and enduring connection to Scottish heritage have made it a favourite among visitors, photographers, and Outlander enthusiasts alike.  

Each image is carefully refined in post-production with restraint — shaping tonal balance, colour harmony, and texture to preserve the natural atmosphere of the scene. The intention is never to exaggerate, but to distil — allowing the history and character of place to emerge with clarity and depth.
