5 Must-See Castles in Scotland (And the Stories Behind Them)

5 Must-See Castles in Scotland (And the Stories Behind Them) - Soul of Alba Photography

Scotland has more castles per square mile than almost anywhere else in the world. From brooding Highland fortresses to fairytale pink towers, each one carries centuries of history within its walls. Here are five that I believe every visitor — and every lover of Scottish heritage — should experience.

1. Eilean Donan Castle | Scottish Highlands

Perhaps the most photographed castle in Scotland, Eilean Donan sits at the confluence of three sea lochs in the western Highlands, connected to the shore by a narrow stone bridge. Built in the 13th century and dramatically restored in the early 20th, it has appeared in countless films and remains one of the most iconic images of Scotland.

I photographed Eilean Donan in the golden hour, when the light turns the loch to copper and the castle seems to float between sky and water. It is a place that rewards patience.

2. Stirling Castle | Stirlingshire

Stirling Castle stands on a volcanic crag above the city, commanding views across the Forth Valley and the Ochil Hills. It was one of the most important castles in Scottish history — a royal residence, a military stronghold, and the site of several Scottish coronations including that of Mary Queen of Scots.

The castle's position is extraordinary. On a clear day you can see as far as the Highlands to the north and Edinburgh to the east. It is a place that makes you feel the full sweep of Scottish history.

3. Craigievar Castle | Aberdeenshire

Craigievar is the castle of fairy tales — a slender pink tower rising improbably from the Aberdeenshire countryside, its turrets and corbelling seemingly designed for a storybook. Built in the early 17th century and largely unchanged since, it is one of the finest examples of Scottish Baronial architecture in existence.

It inspired Walt Disney's vision of a fairytale castle, and standing before it, it is easy to understand why. There is something almost unreal about its perfection.

4. Kilchurn Castle | Loch Awe

Kilchurn Castle sits on a rocky peninsula at the northeastern end of Loch Awe, its ruined towers reflected in the still water below. Built in the 15th century by the Campbell clan, it was abandoned in the 18th century after being struck by lightning, and has been a romantic ruin ever since.

I have photographed Kilchurn in mist, in golden light, and under dramatic skies. It is one of those subjects that gives something different every time — a castle that seems to change with the mood of the loch.

5. Midhope Castle (Lallybroch) | Scotland

Known to millions of Outlander fans as Lallybroch — the fictional Fraser family seat — Midhope Castle is a 16th-century tower house in West Lothian. Long before the television series brought it to international attention, it was a quietly remarkable piece of Scottish history, its harled walls and crow-stepped gables typical of the period.

Visiting Midhope is a pilgrimage for Outlander fans, but even without that connection, it is a beautiful and atmospheric place — a castle that feels genuinely lived-in by history.
